In 1995, KIPP Academy opened to 45 fifth graders in the South Bronx. By 1998, the school had grown to serve 240 students, from 5th to 8th grade. In 2000 KIPP Academy became a New York City Department of Education Charter School and since then it has been one of the top performing public middle schools in the Bronx. On the 2008-09 New York State exams, 96% of 8th graders scored proficient in math and 98% scored proficient in English Language Arts.
Every KIPP Academy student learns to play an orchestral instrument and read music. The 180-piece KIPP Academy String and Rhythm Orchestra has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Apollo Theater, Madison Square Garden, and Mayor Bloomberg’s inauguration, among other venues, with musicians such as Alicia Keys, Wynton Marsalis, Roger Waters, and John Mayer.
The desire, discipline and dedication of our KIPPsters – big and small – create our culture of working hard and being nice. While we are focused on academic success, KIPP Academy also stresses the importance of character education. Together, academic rigor and the deliberate teaching of character drive preparedness for high school, college and the world beyond. Our consistently high expectations lead us to believe that all of our our KIPPsters will be self-sufficient, successful, and happy in the competitive world and will build a better tomorrow for themselves and us all.
