A Teacher's Day

While programs vary from school to school, below is a window into a KIPP NYC teacher’s day – a sample seventh grade math teacher’s schedule.

A typical teacher’s day runs from approximately 7:15am to 5:15pm. Teachers are available by cell phone to students, families and staff outside of school hours. Staff schedules build-in considerable time for collaboration and professional development by grade level and content teams, and on a school-wide and KIPP NYC-wide basis. Teachers are observed regularly in the classroom and receive feedback throughout the year.

  • Thinking Skills is a teacher-developed critical thinking skills program. During this time students - independently and in pairs - work through a variety of concepts and problems that are reviewed in the appropriate class during the school day.
  • Some KIPP NYC schools have advisory periods during which small groups of students meet to explore issues with school staff. Discussions focus on a variety of issues including Internet safety, parental relationships, high school preparation, and conflict resolution.
  • Co-curricular electives at KIPP NYC schools run the gamut, from orchestra and band, to dance, journalism and art. Each school’s offering reflects the talents and interests of its teachers.
